Art Progress Meme 1995-2014 by GingerOpal Art Progress Meme 1995-2014 by GingerOpal
EXPLANATION FOR THE DAUNTING LENGTH OF THIS MEME: I have some nieces who keep comparing their artwork to what mine looks like now, so I decided to post clear back to when I was their age for their benefit. Also, I drew ALL THE TIME and not just once in a while, which is why improvement happened so quickly during my tween years.

Oh man, I have sooooo much old art I had to go through for this, it took forever to put this thing together! :faint:

I am the woman whose style never changes. All these years and my stuff looks the same, with variations and improvements here and there, of course. Seriously, the only two years that don't look consistent with the rest of my art are the year my shoulders were injured and the following year when I was finishing up physical therapy and getting used to drawing every day again.

Also, for those concerned about my pitiful year in 2013, don't worry, I'm getting better. Discouragement is a huge part of art and it comes and goes like the flu (although some times much worse than others) and I know the awful feelings will become history as I move on to what will hopefully be a much better year. :)

UPDATE: Huzzah! 2014 was a MUCH better year than 2013!

You've come a very long way!  And 2013 wasn't a pitiful year.  Perhaps slow, perhaps sparse, but not pitiful!

Gosh your growth over the years is incredible. Also kinda incredible how good you were to start off haha You drew so much so young! I'm envious of artists who had the foresight to start early like that XD
It's also really crazy when I realize just how long I've been following you. Some of the stuff in here I remember seeing posted. You'd always been such a great artist in my eyes, and when I see it all lined up with the progression clearly revealed, man it's crazy.

You have such talent too for a lot of different styles, mediums and moods. You're really very inspiring, you know ;u;

This is really neat to see. I honestly relate so much to your 2013 year. I'm lucky enough to be able to get my BFA this May providing I don't mess up, but I've had such a hard time working through as the years went on. I have gone from drawing a minimum of 5 pages daily to hardly one. The fear of not being good enough for teachers and peers has torn at me so much, not to mention some rather honest, but blunt comments from my professors.

How did you work through it? I've had a hard time working through this fear and block. ;-;

*cries because your arts are so beautiful*

I've always found eyes the most striking thing about your art. I don't know why. Ever since I first started following you way back when you were scargut-the-gutless (which is still a wicked awesome name though I'm not sure there were dashes or if I put them in the right spots...) and I think before your current icon is what it is, I've just adored your art and I've always loved the way you draw eyes. Eyes and mouths have always been something about your art that is very signature, I think. The way you draw them is extremely unique and always tells me "this is Ginger's art!" before I even see the name, and it somewhat surprises me (and yet... it doesn't surprise me) that these are the two features that have never really changed much at all, outside getting cleaner and more expressive. I see your impressive colour mastery and gift with patterns and textures have always been far more impressive than mine own, too xD

I for one and very much looking forward to yet another year of your art~

You were so much better at drawing when you were 15 than I am at twenty! T_T BLARG!
I think it's cool that your style of drawing is evident even when you were 11-12. Your skills kept getting better, but you always showed through!

That's terrible that school was so awful for you! Seriously, telling a great artist like you to do something else. Though I'm sure you're probably pro at vocal stuff too. And not being able to graduate! That makes me scared for college when I come back from my mission. BUT I'm sure you'll come through all right. You're so awesome that things'll definitely work out eventually! Hopefully 2014 will be a great year for you!

Wow. I can't believe how much you've gone through! I'm so sorry for all the discouragement you've had with the school and creating artwork. I just wanted you to know that your artwork is amazing to me. I've admired your style since I first saw it back in 2011. There's a lot of discouragement out there and I can sympathize with the disorganization of BYUI, but keep trying. It's truly fantastic to see new artwork from you and I will always be a fan!

Thank you for recognizing her as a spoof of Venus! I wasn't sure if anyone would be able to, since this meme isn't friendly to horizontal compositions (which seems to be most of what I do) so even if I zoomed out, the other most identifying parts of the painting would've been cropped off. Anyway, I'm glad you liked this and thank you so much!

I don't see why you would be (unless it's the thought of searching through massive folios of old art, because that was a monster, and I don't blame you for not wanting to do that). I remember the sketchbook you made for my sister (back in 2001-ish) full of hobbits and gundam pilots. I loved your old drawings! I wanted to be as good as you. If I could steal that sketchbook away from Liz I would! You should make a progress meme too! :excited:

The looking at old art... >_<  I can barely stand to look at things I drew a few months ago.  Plus, there's a LOT.  I think I'd get about 1/8 of the way through and have an emotional breakdown.  Not pretty.

Oh gadzooks...that thing?  I'd forgotten about that!  O_O  I'm so glad you think the art in there is worth looking at, because.... Yeah.  *shudder*  I think I burned any art that was older than three years ago and not on this site.  The fact that you like it, though...  You actually have good taste, so maybe it's not as bad as I remember....  (Not that I didn't work hard on that sketchbook, but you know how it is.  "Look at that hand/face/whatever!  It's so off!  And the anatomy...and the perspective... WHAT HAVE I DONE WITH MY LIFE??!!!!! *sobs* )

You have some incredible stuff going back so far and it's fun to see hints of your style from your earliest work. I hear you about 2013 being a rough year... I'm insanely impressed with how far back you managed to find old art, it's ALMOST older than I am and IS older than my sister which...disturbs me a little bit. :'D

It's amazing to see the improvement over a span of nearly 20 years and just how many stages you've gone through.
Makes me think it'd be a good thing to keep on hand to show to people who are being too impatient about improving with their work despite all the different circumstances going on and around through out years.

ALSO, I'm sure you've learnt a lot of new stuff from that BFA even if it didn't necessarily end well. People aren't necessarily getting better opportunities for work regardless of fancy qualifications so the things it teaches are probably more valued than the actual qualification at present. c:

I hope you have a better year in 2014 though.

The age of my art disturbs me sometimes, too. :giggle:

I keep my old art in folios that are easy to store and I have it organized by years. Although I stopped doing that a few years ago and I can't keep track of what I drew when. DX Anyway, I'm glad of when I did organize things, because it's like keeping a journal, and also it saved my life when I hit an art block, because I could still draw just fine, I just couldn't come up with ideas or compositions or anything, so I looked through my old art for comps I didn't use or wanted to redo, and that was the ONLY reason I passed my art classes with an art block. Old art. Yup. Saved the day.

Also, it's fun to go back and laugh at old art. In a nice way. :XD:

I did learn a lot from my BFA classes and I was glad I returned to school regardless that it didn't end well. I hugely promote getting an education anywhere, whether it's self-taught observation, online tutorials, workshops, or college, I believe in absorbing information from anywhere it can be found. People who feel they're "too good" for taking classes or for self-teaching (because I hear it both ways) are really missing out.

Thank you so much! And I hope you have a great 2014! :glomp:

It's just like
OH MY GOD, THIS EXISTED BEFORE I DID. (my dad's books mainly make me do that)

That's pretty awesome. I know that it's a good habit to get into writing the year you made one thing or another on pieces of work.

Old art is always a good way to energised your creativity. c:

I think the one thing education probably has over being self taught is the networking you can do with other people on the course, and learn more stuff from those people. I mean I've always thought of education be it high school or whatever as less effective at actually learning things and more for the important things you learn socially. And then doing the sponge routine. c8 (and it does seem like people aren't too willing to admit that maybe both methods work well)

I'll try to. And hopefully it'll be a year of the not art block for you. 8D

Thank you so much!

I didn't graduate because of teeny tiny technicalities in the course numbers. That's seriously what all the complicated details boil down to. My science class had the wrong letter in front of it, and thus the balance of the universe collapsed into chaos. I can no longer continue at that school, and frankly I don't want to after all the garbage they put me through. I can graduate at another school, if it's willing to take my tons of credits since I'm so close to graduating. But I don't know where I'd go because so few schools in my area have an illustration program, and they're all so wary of transfer students with a large credit load. I have to get over my art funk before I can consider making a decision like that. I've gone this long without graduating, I suppose I can go longer. Right now I'm going to focus on getting my book published so I'll finally feel like I've accomplished something in my life! :fingerscrossed:

I've got my creativity back, now I'm just missing the drive. I hope I get it soon, since I need to get illustrations done for my novel. Eep! D8
